In 1978, Johansen recorded his self-titled solo debut, backed by the Staten Island Boys. Like most punk bands, the Dolls lived fast and died even faster, leaving Johansen without a vehicle for his musical energy. ![]() ![]() Audiences weren’t ready for five androgynous men who fully incorporated drug use into their image. Johansen joined in ’71, the band changed its name to New York Dolls, and, pulling influences from the Rolling Stones and David Bowie, the band released two albums, produced by Todd Rundgren and George “Shadow” Morton-both curious choices-and single-handedly started the breeding ground for NYC punk. Johansen was dabbling in acting and club-hopping when he met future Dolls bassist Arthur Kane, who was looking for a singer for his band, Actress. His earliest musical endeavor came as the teen vocalist for local band the Vagabond Missionaries, which led to his soul cover band Fast Eddie & the Electric Japs. Johansen was born on Januon Staten Island to an Irish librarian mother and Norwegian tenor father. After the group disbanded, chameleon Johansen shed the spandex from his days fronting the Dolls and eventually reemerged as an actor, bluesman and as alter ego Buster Poindexter before re-forming the Dolls. NE W YORK NATIVE DAVID JOHANSEN IS BEST KNOWN for his stint in the short-lived but megaiconic protopunk outfit the New York Dolls, which solidified Johansen’s role as a pioneer of punk. He says, “It’s kind of the music that I grew up with as a child.” DAVID JOHANSEN Uncle Monk’s self-titled 2007 release is an old-time, back-to-basics approach to country bluegrass. The couple moved from NYC’s Greenwich Village to upstate NY, dropped electric instruments altogether and went on as an acoustic duo. Their project, Uncle Monk, started as a psychedelic jam band three-piece, but stripped down when Tommy picked up the banjo and mandolin in the early ’90s. Tommy toured and recorded with the Ramones until 1977, when, tired of life on the road, he relinquished the drums to Marky Ramone, becoming the producer on both 1978’s Road to Ruin and 1984’s Too Tough To Die, and went on to produce other artists’ albums, including the Replacements’ Tim and Redd Kross’ Neurotica.Īfter returning to college in the late ’80s, Tommy met bassist Claudia Tienan. The Ramones were regulars at CBGB, which, despite the music inside, is an acronym for country, bluegrass and blues, all genres which influenced Tommy’s pre-Ramones music, and would resurface later in his career. When the Ramones formed in 1974, Tommy assumed managerial duty, but soon picked up the sticks in true DIY punk ethos. In high school during the ’60s British Invasion, Ramone met John Cummings-later known as Johnny Ramone-and the two started the garage rock band the Tangerine Puppets, with Tommy on guitar.Īt age 18, he was assistant engineer on Jimi Hendrix’s album Band of Gypsys. “Then the Beatles showed up, and six months later or a year later, we all got electric guitars.” “I got a guitar as a birthday present, and I was very much into that folk era,” he said. I was given a couple 1800w, 120V induction cooktops from Aldi and they are not very accurate and temp is set at 20 degree intervals. You also need to make sure your kettle is induction capable. If you try induction, this would eliminate the controller, but you would need a good thermometer for mashing. You could build an inexpensive simple 240v controller with an Inkbird, MyPIN or Auber PID for probably under $150, if you took the time to really source out the parts and can solder. If you are adventurous and knowledgeable, you could convert your 15 gallon boil kettle to electric with a 5500 watt element. One of the all in one BIAB systems (like the foundry) would be a great thing. If you went BIAB you could really downsize the amount of equipment and lugging. I'm also still trying to perfect the whirlpool (I use this ) but so far it's been "good enough" for great beer. I think less aggressive stirring / clump breaking is helping, vs cooler batch sparging where I can stir the crap out of it. I'm aiming for about 3/4 - 1 gal / minute recirculation rate. I've considered using a BIAB mesh but held off so far since it will be another thing to clean. I don't think it would matter at all if you were just doing a single infusion, but for recirculating I want to limit grain husks coming through the basket or restricting the flow. I haven't had to change recipes really, other than figuring out what the kettle losses and boil off would be for a 5 gallon batch.Īs mentioned above, getting the crush right has taken a little bit of experimentation. I didn't buy the pump since I already had a few, but I do recirculate. The controls are easy to use (sure, you have to bend over to use the control panel) and the delay timer and temperature set point that turns the heat on and off work very well. Being able to set the power in 1% increments (probably a duty cycle controller) is great, especially given the low but precise power needed for boiling with the steam slayer. However, it provides excellent control for what I want to do. The short answer is yes, I'd recommend it, with the caveat that it isn't a fully automated system. I was sold on the Anvil product over the competitors due to price point, temperature control range, size of the unit which fit my brewing habits (I do 10 liter batches), double walled construction, dual power input capability, and the Blichmann/Anvil customer service which is excellent. Quote from: oginme on February 01, 2020, 05:35:22 pm I have the 6.5 gallon version of the Anvil Foundry. This is traded off with a lengthier cleaning process at the end of the brew session, so my net time is the same. Having the unit full with water and automatically start heating after setting the delay, means I start mashing in sooner in the mornings when I brew. high output burner) and this pretty much now mimics that process without all the mess of moving the kettle and wrapping it with insulation for the mash steps. I had previously been doing BIAB on my gas stove (v. ![]() Since then I have been cruising along and getting very consistent results. I took another 4 brews to play around with my crush to get satisfactory results. It took three brews to get the process down and figured out to my liking. My process is now well established with the unit after 19 brews. If you prefer having Bluetooth controls or the ability to set in an automated mash schedule then there are other, more pricey options (Grainfather). I would recommend the Anvil Foundry if it fits your requirements. I have not done any mods on it yet, and this would most likely be the only one that I consider. Right now, if I were to change anything it would be the head on the recirculation pump to allow for an exit valve to control flow rate rather than the hose clamp. ![]() If the face were pitched to face upward just a bit, it would make adjustment and operation a lot easier. The Saints, meanwhile, fall to 3-6 with the ugly defeat, and a full game behind the Buccaneers and Falcons in the sloppy NFC South. His legs, coupled with a monster night for veteran pass rusher Justin Houston, headlined a 27-13 victory for the visitors, giving the Ravens their third straight "W" to stay atop their division. Lamar Jackson, king of the highlight-reel play this side of Patrick Mahomes, seized the spotlight in Week 9's finale, carrying an otherwise erratic Baltimore attack to help the Ravens cruise past the Saints in New Orleans.
